Over the years, a number of artists have been taking residency at Thapong Visual Art Centre but now local artists have a chance to apply for residency in Mauritius at the invitation of pARTage.
Application for pARTage residency is open to dynamic individuals from Africa who mainly work in ceramic or fibreglass sculptures.
Interested artists are required to send three images of their works, and motivational letter outlining the reasons for the application and intent. Applicants will also be expected to submit short curriculum vitaes, which should include names, country, line of specialisation, education, and exhibitions undertaken. Names and e-mails addresses of two referees are also a requirement. The six-week residency will start on March 17 to April 23, 2010.
Selected artists will be provided with self-catering accommodation, stipend for food and inland transport, and some basic materials. Artists will however not receive any kind of payment for their participation in the residency, and selected artists will be expected to pay for their own airfares.
Artists can apply to ArtMoves Africa (AMA), which supports travel for African artists.
Selected artists can choose to work alone during the residency or collaborate with each other.
pARTage's art residency programme aims to support artists in the development of their artistic practices and ideas, offering them an opportunity to live and work on the Indian Ocean Island country. The residency, according to the organisers, will act as a stimulus to bring a small panorama of contemporary new media used in art making, while also facilitating cultural exchange and creative dialogue in an attempt to solidify the existing international artistic network that pARTage, a recognised association of Mauritian artists, has tasked itself to build through the Triangle Arts Trust network. Mauritius Core Inflation Slowed in December, Agency Says
Mauritius’s so-called core inflation measure slowed in December, the national statistics agency said on its Web site today.
Core 1 inflation slowed to an annual 2.4 percent from 2.7 percent in November while Core 2 inflation slowed to 3.8 percent from 4.1 percent.
Core 1 excludes food, beverages and tobacco while core 2 excludes those goods as well as mortgage payments, energy prices and administered prices.

Mauritius is billed to host a high-level conference, tagged "Doing Business 2010 in Africa: Sharing Reform Experiences," 13-15 January to strengthen the capacity of African countries to promote business-friendly reforms, share experiences and strengthen South-South cooperation, PANA reported.
The two-day conference is being organised in partnership with the World Bank, and will attract delegates from 15 African countries -- Burkina Faso, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
According to the programme of the conference, released by the Mauritian Finance Ministry, there will be speeches by Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and Ruth Kagia, World Bank Country Director for Mauritius, while Finance Minister Rama Sithanen will give a keynote presentation on Mauritius.
The World Bank report ''Doing Business 2010: Reforming through Difficult Times'' for this year has ranked Rwanda and Liberia among the ''Top Ten'' business-friendly reformers worldwide.
Mauritius was ranked 17th - a significant improvement over last year's ranking of 24 among 183 countries.

Around Mauritius on one Wheel
South African adventurer Christo Coetzer is attempting to travel around the Indian Ocean paradise island of Mauritius on a unicycle! Christo, a 23-year-old honours student at the University of Pretoria, leaves for Mauritius this week and his attempt to cover the approximately 117km of coastline should take him between 10 and 14 days, averaging 20km a day.
His journey starts from Port Louis on Saturday, 19 December.
Christo has visited Mauritius a number of times and is undertaking this adventure to promote Mauritius as a tourist destination, including the diversity of the island and its new focus on cyclo-tourism. He will be documenting the trip to produce a DVD and is hoping that his efforts will make it into the Guinness World Book of Records.

Paradisiac Mauritius Hosts Fun Regatta
La Regatta Mauritius is a unique international regatta being held in traditional Mauritian wooden boats called "Pirogues". The annual event is taking place this weekend in the legendary bay of Mahebourg (southeast of Mauritius) which shelters one of the most beautiful lagoons of the Island. This interactive and original event is made for travelers passionately fond of sailing and sea adventures as well as travelers eager for discovery and new sensations. This exciting challenge will attract members of boat and sailing clubs companies (team building, original incentive trips, rewards, products launch and advertising) and groups of friends. The teams are made up of 5 to 7 people, assisted by 2 Mauritian skippers on 4 different regattas to qualify for the final and to win the trophy of La Regatta.
The "pirogue" used during the competition is a traditional boat for fishermen in Mauritius. Manufactured out of Black Wood, it measures between 19 and 23 feet. (Pirogues of the Regatta, are lighter and more pointed than those used for traditional fishing). The middle mast is made of Takamaka wood, a pan tropical tree that can reach 90 feet. Moreover, the yard that tightens the sail is in bamboo. A pirogue can take up to ten people. Each team which participates in la Regatta Mauritius will receive a sail manufactured according to specific norms and on which its logo will be printed on a large scale. The sail will equip the team’s boat during the regattas. It is of course possible for participants to purchase several sails. In addition, several organizations will be promoting environmental awareness with workshops and activities on the beach during the event.
The island of Mauritius (French: île Maurice) was known by Arab and Austronesian sailors as early as the 10th century. Portuguese sailors first visited it in 1507 and established a visiting base, leaving the island uninhabited. Three ships of the eight Dutch Second Fleet that were sent to the Spice Islands were blown off course during a cyclone and landed on the island in 1598, naming it in honor of Prince Maurice of Nassau, the ruler of the Netherlands. In 1638, the Dutch established the first permanent settlement. Because of tough climatic conditions including cyclones and the deterioration of the settlement, the Dutch abandoned the island some decades later. France, which already controlled the neighboring Île Bourbon (now Réunion) seized Mauritius in 1715 and later renamed it Île de France (Isle of France). Under French rule, the island developed a prosperous economy based on sugar production. In the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) the British set out to gain control of the island. Despite winning the Battle of Grand Port, Napoleon's only naval victory over the British, the French surrendered to a British invasion at Cap Malheureux three months later.

Mauritius is best-governed country in African region
Mauritius has been adjudged as the best governed country in the African region, while the war-ravaged Somalia comes at the bottom according to a latest index on governance in Africa.
While it topped the list in governance, Mauritius was beaten to the second place in the category for safety and rule of law by Cape Verde.
Human development also remained an issue for Mauritius, where it took fourth position while its neighbour Seychelles topped the list among the 53 countries in the Ibrahim Index of African Governance.
Even Libya beat Mauritius in HDI coming third, while Tunisia was second.
While South Africa came in at number five on the overall list after Cape Verde, Seychelles and Botswana, it was found the third best-run country in southern Africa after Mauritius and Botswana.
The Index, published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, is Africa's leading assessment of governance that informs and empowers its citizens.
It measures the delivery of public goods and services to citizens using four main pillars -- safety and rule of law; participation and human rights, sustainable economic opportunity; and outcomes of governance.
